Cognitive Psychology

Gestalt psychology forms the foundation of cognitive psychology which is a school of thought in psychology. The term cognitive psychology was firs coined by Ulric Neisser. He first described this term in his book ‘COGNITIVE Psychology’ published in 1967. In his book, he describes the human mind as an information processing system which identifies the sensory input, processes it based on the previous experience or the prior knowledge it has and arrives at a conclusion based on the same. In simple words, cognitive psychology examines the internal processes of human mind and the response in produces during problem solving. It also examines other mental processes like memory and language usage and understanding. The mental process which mediates between a stimulus and response are the processes which interest cognitive psychologists. The theories of cognitive psychology basically take the form of an algorithm of heuristic. An algorithm is a phenomenon in which the rules would not be clear but would certainly help the individual in arriving at a conclusion whereas heuristic is just the vice-versa in which though the rules are clear would not guarantee a solution. Cognitive psychology is widely accepted and considered as unlike other schools of thought of psychology, cognitive psychology does not work based on introspection. It actually accepts and follows various scientific methodologies. Cognitive psychology is the more recent addition to psychology or psychological research. It is actually considered the software that runs in a computer, which could be nothing but the brain. It has been addressed so as it is a way of thinking and reasoning which helps in resolving a problem in a given situation. Because of cognitive psychology’s recent contributions to the world of psychology, it has been accepted by many psychologists and also made available as a part in various other schools of thought of psychology like developmental psychology, social psychology and personality psychology..
